Further up the Bahian coastline is another lighthouse, on Itapoen beach. In the water off this Bahia beach, reefs and rocks protect the water nearest the shore from strong currents, so as long as you stay close to the shore it is OK to swim. But further out into the water are some of the strongest currents, and even the tourist surf camps tend to avoid these waters. A much safer choice in the array of Salvador beaches is nearby Plakaford. Here the calm waters and soft sandy beach are welcoming for families and children.
South of the city of Salvador, the Salvador Brazil beach array includes some gorgeous island Bahia beaches. Island beaches include Tinhare and Boipeba. Their lovely palm tree lined beaches are again good for swimming and general family beach days, as in spite of being on islands, the beaches are protected by the underwater rock structure or by the orientation of the islands relative to the mainland.
