Top Tourist Attractions in Tunisia, Part 1

Tunisia, the North African country, is the most popular holiday destination among the tourists for its liberal Islamic culture and the modern European approach. It is a unique mix of different culture and civilization which has conditioned the whole country throughout the ages. Here is a list with the top places of interest in Tunisia that are worth visiting.

1.     Bulla Regia

Lying in the north-western part of Tunisia is Bulla Regia a notable Roman city. Located close to the modern city Jendouba, Bulla Regia is renowned for semi-subterranean houses belonging to the Hadrianic period. However, the first floors of these houses were destroyed in an earthquake. Still Bulla Regia has structures like Basilicas, Temples, Baths, Villas and many more which exhibit the unique architecture of the region.

2.     Cap Bon

Cap Bon is located in the north-east of Tunisia, enclosed by the Gulf of Tunis. Also known as Sharik/ Shariq peninsula it has many important towns to visit like Nabeul, Sidi Daoud, Djebel Aboid, Kelibia, El Haouaria and many more. The places in Cap Bon are worth exploring as some are the centers of enjoying cultural activities, some for exploring Punic and Roman ruins and some for scenic beauty.

3.     Carthage

Carthage, an ancient city in Tunisia, lies on the eastern side of Lake Tunis. It has rich history which states that it was of great strategic importance for the Phoenicians, Punics and Romans. The wonders of these civilizations can be well seen on visiting the Roman amphitheater, the Baths, cisterns, cathedrals, museums and many more. 4.     Chemtou

Chemtou is a historical site in the north-western region of Tunisia close to the borders of Algeria. Situated on a distance of 20 Km from the modern city of Jendouba, it has many sites to explore like the marble quarries which belong to the Roman period. Apart from the marble quarries, the museums too hold some of the articles of historical importance.

5.     Chott el Djerid

Chott el Djerid, the location for the film Star War series, is the largest salt pan of Sahara. Located in the southern Tunisia, it has many picturesque oases to visit like the oases of Tamerza, Chebika, Midès, Kebili, Douz and Bled el Djerid. If visiting in the month of December, you will be fortunate to participate in the Sahara Festival.

6.     Djerba

Located in the Gulf of Gabes, Djerba is the largest island which is located on the northern end of Tunisia. Djerba is a popular destination among French, German, Italian and Czech tourists. Though the largest city is Houmt-Souk, but there are other important cities like Gightis, Adjim, Bordj Djillidj, El Kantara, Guella, Midoun and many more. These different places in Djerba are famous for Roman sites, sponge-fishing, potter’s village, relaxing resorts and historical monuments.
