Top Tourist Attractions in Tunisia, Part 2

In this blog I will continue presenting the best places of interest in Tunisia. There is no doubt that only a day will not be enough to see all of them. That’s why, I offer you to stay in some of the Tunisia hotels. In this way you guarantee your memorable experience there. 

1.     Dougga

Originally a Berber village, Dougga is located in the north of Tunisia. It was taken over by the Romans in the 2nd century and on your visit, you have much of Roman ruins to explore. It was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and effort is made to preserve the Roman remains. The temples, baths, villas, theaters are the best examples of the Roman remains and architecture.

2.     Haidra

Located on the west of Tunisia, Haidra was founded by the Romans. Originally known as Ammaedara, the city was built on the land bordering the valleys and the Berber tribes. It is one of the oldest cities and features ruined structures of basilicas, mausoleums and Byzantine fortress. The town of Thala with numerous colonial houses is also a beautiful place to visit.

3.     Kerkennah Islands

Kerkennah Islands is a collection of islands in the Gulf of Gabes of Tunisia with main islands being Chergui and Gharbi. Located on the eastern coast of Tunisia, the main town of Kerkennah Islands is Remla. The Kerkennah Islands though is not much popular among tourists, still has many sandy beaches to explore and relax.

4.     Thuburbo Majus

Thuburbo Majus which was known as Colonia Julia Aurelia Commoda in the Roman times is located on the north of Tunisia. It was originally a Punic town which lies 60 Km southwest of Carthage. Later it was founded by Augustus in 27 BC and it became an important trade. During the excavation in this region, numerous Roman ruins were found like the Roman Capitol, Forum, Baths and theaters, which are worth watching on your visit to Thuburbo Majus.

5.     Utica

Lying to the north-west of Carthage, Utica is an ancient city founded by the Phoenicians. It is considered to be their first colony, which was founded to promote Phoenician trade. It came under the Punic rule in the 4th century BC and under the Roman Empire earned the status of municipium in 36 BC. Though Utica does not exist any long, but it has several important historical sites to see.

6.     Sbeitla

Lying in the north-central part of Tunisia, Sbeitla is a small town that features some of the best preserved Roman ruins in the world. Besides its notable "The Forum", the town also consists of several other interesting historical landmarks and sights. Earlier known as Sufetula, Sbeitla served as the capital city of Tunisia during the reign of Prefect Gregory in 646.

To sum up, I would say that there is much more that can be seen in Tunisia. If you still hesitate where to spend your holiday, Tunisia is the perfect destination for you, because it is not famous only for its beaches, there everyone can find something for themselves and will remember the time spent in Tunisia forever.
